Tonight Brock Lesnar will be looking to have no mercy for his challenger for the WWE Championship, The Undertaker. Kurt Angle was WWE Champion last time Smackdown were at PPV, back at Summerslam in August. The Undertaker became number one contender for Kurts title, defeating Brock Lesnar and The Big Show in a triple threat match. It was during Kurt and Undertakers match the next week on Smackdown that Brock would come down and attack both men with steel chairs, essentially costing Undertaker the title. Brock would get a shot at the gold himself and beat Kurt Angle in an iron man match. Stephanie McMahon would go on to announce that The Undertaker is number one contender to Brocks title and later Undertaker would announce that the match would be a bikers chain match in which a bikers chain is hanging from a pole in the corner that either man can climb up and use.

The United States Championship will also be defended tonight as Eddie Guerrero is set to defend against The Big Show. Big Show attacked Eddie Guerrero backstage on Smackdown a few weeks ago and Eddie would get his revenge by spraying Show with a hose of sewage. Last week on Smackdown Big Show got the last laugh as he destroyed Eddie Guerrero’s low rider and even chokeslammed Guerrero through the windshield. Eddie and Chavo are now the WWE Tag Team Champions too. The other title set to be defended tonight is the Cruiserweight Championship. Tajiri beat Rey Mysterio for the belt a few weeks ago on Smackdown and tonight Mysterio gets his rematch. It might be worth looking out for Jamie Noble as Tajiri blinded his girlfriend Nidia last week on Smackdown. `

One of tonights main events will be McMahon vs. McMahon as Vince takes on daughter Stephanie. Vince wasn’t happy that Stephanie had made Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker for No Mercy so told Stephanie that she would be fighting her own father at the event with the loser losing their job. Linda McMahon will be in Stephanie’s corner whilst Sable will be in the corner of Vince. Also tonight, Kurt Angle will be taking on John Cena. Kurt thinks John should have more respect for him and the two have broken down into a comedy of rap battles and midget’s. Cena has attacked Angle a couple of times, including an attack with his chain. The two meet in a re-match of Cena’s debut in the WWE.

Also tonight, Chris Benoit takes on the man that claims can’t be beaten by the Canadian Crippler, A-Train. Matt Hardy goes one on one with the man he was supposed to take on at Summerslam, Zach Gowan and The APA take on the Basham Brothers, a rivalry fuelled by Bradshaw hitting the Bashams manager Shaniqua with a clothesline from hell.

On Sunday Night Heat before the event Billy Kidman defeated Shannon Moore.

A video package kicks us off, first focusing on Vince McMahon and Stephanie McMahon and then moving onto Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker. Michael Cole then welcomes us to Baltimore, he’s joined by Tazz.

Tajiri vs. Rey Mysterio – WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match

This is a first singles match on PPV between these two men. Rey Mysterio is looking to get the Cruiserweight title back but has never won on PPV since his PPV debut at Summerslam 2002, this will be his 9th PPV match. Tajiri has wrestled twice at No Mercy PPV’s before and lost both times, Rey wrestled on last years event and lost. A lot of the build for this match is about Tajiri blinding Nidia last week on Smackdown. Both men feel each other out in the early going, grappling and blocking each others kicks. Mysterio applies a leglock which Tajiri reverses into an armbar. Tajiri hits some chops and right hands until Mysterio gets back into it with an arm drag and a dropkick to the knee. Tajiri attempts his trademark handspring elbow but Mysterio sees it coming and hits a dropkick. Tajiri heads to the outside and so Rey dives over with a plancha.

Back in the ring and Tajiri works the left arm of Rey Mysterio. Tajiri hits a big kick to the side of Mysterio’s face and then goes back to the armbar. Mysterio hits a springboard arm drag but Tajiri straight away hits the challenger with some big kicks for a near fall. Tajiri throws Mysterio into the corner shoulder first and then Mysterio starts to fight back. He goes to the top but Tajiri catches him with another kick. Mysterio then hits a tornado DDT for his first near fall of the match. Mysterio hits a springboard cross body for a near fall and then the two men exchange pinfalls. Tajiri slingshots Mysterio over the top but Mysterio lands on his feet and pulls Tajiri to the outside. Mysterio then flies off the apron and hits a hurricanrana to Tajiri.

Mysterio throws Tajiri into the ring and attempts a springboard but Tajiri ducks it and kicks Mysterio. He then throws Mysterio into the ropes but Mysterio swings around and hits a 619 to Tajiri’s gut. Mysterio then tries for a west coast pop but Tajiri reverses it into a powerbomb for a near fall. Tajiri back body drops Mysterio who lands on the top rope and hits a moonsault for a near fall. Tajiri applies a tarantula and then attempts to kick Mysterio in the head but Rey ducks it and hits a dropkick. Mysterio slingshots Tajiri onto the middle rope and then hits the champion with the 619 and then the west coast pop! Mysterio has Tajiri rolled up but a fan climbs into the ring. I suspect it isn’t a fan, he looks like a pretty big guy in a suit and wrestling boots. Tajiri gets up and kicks Mysterio in the face and then hooks the leg and it’s over! Mysterio goes 9 PPV matches without a win. Tajiri retains his title.

Josh Mathews is backstage and asks Vince McMahon how he feels about wrestling his own daughter tonight. McMahon says he’s not as nervous as Mathews and he says that if anyone gets involved in his match with Stephanie tonight then they will be fired.

Chris Benoit vs. A-Train

First time meeting between these two men tonight. Chris Benoit has a 1-1 record at No Mercy PPV’s whilst A-Train has only wrestled once at the event before in a match that never really got underway. A-Train takes Benoit down early with a shoulder block, sending Benoit to the outside. Back in the ring and A-Train throws Benoit out of the ring again. A “shave your back” chant breaks out aimed at A-Train. There is no Sable in A-Trains corner tonight. Benoit hits a couple of chops and then attempts a German suplex but A-Train fights him off. Benoit hits another chop but A-Train takes him down with a clubbing blow. Benoit fights A-Train with kicks and right hands until A-Train pushes him away. A-Train hits a powerslam, he looks like he’s dyed his beard for tonight. A-Train hits a splash for a two count.

Chris Benoit drop toe holds A-Train into the middle turnbuckle but A-Train hits him with a pump kick for a two count. A-Train continues the assault, choking Benoit with his boot and hitting him with right hands. A-Train hits a butterfly shoulder breaker for a near fall. Benoit is bleeding from the mouth. A-Train hits a couple of headbutts but then gets distracted, arguing with the referee. Benoit takes the opportunity to hit some kicks but A-Train takes him down to the mat with a clothesline and then applies a double armbar. Benoit gets out of it and drops A-Train with a DDT. Both men get to their feet and A-Train hits a German suplex. A-Train then throws Benoit to the outside of the ring and rams him into the barricade before throwing him back into the ring. A-Train grabs a steel chair and slides it into the ring but Benoit sees him coming.

A-Train holds Benoit high above his head but Benoit slips and falls down head first onto the steel chair. That was a rough landing. A-Train sets up the chair in the corner but Benoit takes advantage and applies the crippler crossface! A-Train gets out of it but gets caught with three German suplexes. Benoit heads to the top but A-Train throws him back down to the mat. A-Train hits a clothesline, mocks Benoit and looks to head to the top. He sees Benoit get back up to his feet and gets back in the ring and hits the de-railer! Benoit kicks out at 2 and then A-Train attempts the pump kick bur Benoit sidesteps it and A-Train’s boot goes right through the chair. Benoit then takes him down and locks on the Sharpshooter! A-Train taps out and Benoit gets the win!

Matt Hardy is backstage looking for Shannon Moore and finds him being held up against a wall by Heidenreich. Heidenreich (and little Jonny?) aren’t happy that Matt Hardy binned his tape but Matt claims it was a Shannon Moore greatest matches tape. Heidenreich apologises and walks off.

Zach Gowan vs. Matt Hardy

This match was due to take place at Summerslam but Gowan got injured. Matt Hardy has a 2-1 record at No Mercy PPVs. All of those were tag team matches. Matt rams Gowan into the corner and then Gowan fights back with a dropkick and leg lariat. Matt hits a powerslam and then pops Gowan on the top rope but Gowan hits Hardy with a bulldog off the top for a one count. Shannon Moore gets involved, grabbing Gowans leg which gives Hardy the advantage. Matt hits a big clothesline in the corner and then hits snake eyes and a big clothesline for a two count. Hardy hits a legdrop for a near fall. Matt hits a suplex and then applies a double arm bar.

This match has been all Matt Hardy. He hits a powerslam and then attempts a moonsault from the top but Zach Gowan rolls out of the way. Both men get to their feet and Zach hits a dropkick sending Matt to the outside. Gowan flips to the outside which is pretty impressive. Matt gets back in the ring and Zach goes up top and hits a cross body for a near fall. Matt then hits a side effect from nowhere for a near fall. Gowan goes to the top but Matt meets him up there and attempts a side suplex but Gowan fights him off. Gowan then hits a moonsault and hooks the leg for the three! Zach Gowan wins the match in a massive upset tonight!

Vince McMahon is backstage when his wife Linda walks in. Linda begs Vince not to go through with the match tonight. Vince says that he will make the rule that he can only win the match by submission whereas Stephanie can win the match by submission or pinfall. But the match is now no holds barred.

The APA (Bradshaw & Faarooq) vs. The Basham Brothers (Doug & Danny)

This match was made on Heat and it’s another first time meeting, this time between experienced tag team the APA and newcomers The Bashams. Faarooq and Bradshaw have a 1-1 record at No Mercy as well as a no contest in a match that didn’t get underway. Bradshaw lays into Doug in the early going with big right hands and a shoulder block. Bradshaw tags Faarooq who lays into Doug with right hands and a reverse elbow for a two count. Faarooq hits a powerslam and tags in Bradshaw. The APA hit a double spinebuster on Danny who is now the legal man. Bradshaw tags Faarooq and the APA hit a double shoulder knockdown for a two count. Danny manages to fight off Faarooq with a botch of a move and then tags in Doug. Doug hits a slam and then attempts a splash but Faarooq gets his knees up.

Bradshaw drags Doug out of the ring, smashes him off the barricade, the ring steps and then the ring apron before sliding him into the ring. Faarooq attempts the dominator but Doug slides down. Danny then comes in and because it’s hard to tell the two Bashams apart, they just come in when they like. The Bashams lay into Faarooq and get plenty of opportunities to double team as Bradshaw keeps coming in. Doug hits a snapmare and then applies a chinlock on Faarooq. Faarooq gets out of it but Doug pulls him back own to the mat. Danny Basham tags in and goes back to the chinlock on Faarooq. Faarooq gets out of it but Danny hits him with a powerslam. Faarooq hits a spinebuster and then both men make tags!

Bradshaw hits anything moving with elbows, boots and clotheslines. He hits Doug with a powerbomb but Doug kicks out. Bradshaw hits a fallaway slam on Danny and then a top rope fallaway slam on Doug! Bradshaw gets a two count on Doug and then Faarooq accidentally takes the referee down. Bradshaw hits the clothesline on hell on Doug and then from nowhere Shaniqua comes out (post boob job) and nails Bradshaw with a metal pole! Danny hits some sort of jumping legdrop on Bradshaw and hooks the leg for the win! The Basham Brothers beat the APA tonight!

Rating: 5.5/10

Josh Mathews interviews Shaniqua backstage. She claims that from the clothesline from hell, she has swelling from the boobs. Clearly a boob job. She then says that the Bashams are to be rewarded with a whipping.

Cole and Tazz hype up the biker chain match between Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker before linking to a VT about Vince and Stephanie McMahon.

Stephanie McMahon vs. Vince McMahon – No Holds Barred match with both jobs on the line

Whoever loses this match will have to resign from their job of chairman of the board or chairman of the board. It’s a first time one on one match between these two and the first time either of them have ever fought on a No Mercy pay per view. Vince knocks Stephanie down with a shoulder charge and then throws Stephanie around by her hair.

Vince hits some shoulder charges in the corner and lays in some knees. Sable gets involved too, slapping Stephanie until Linda chases Sable off! Vince gets between Linda and Sable and then gets back into the ring. Stephanie is ready to go though and lays in some kicks. Vince grabs Stephanie’s foot and takes her down with a clothesline. This is a no holds barred match so I’m not sure why Sable waited until the referee had turned her back to slap Stephanie. Vince applies a half Boston crab but won’t tap out. Vince applies a double armbar and then a chinlock. Sable throws Vince a metal pipe and once again Linda lays into Sable. Vince grabs Linda by the hair but Linda slap him. Stephanie then hits Vince with a two low blows and rolls up her father but only for a two count. Stephanie grabs the steel pipe and smashes it into the ribs and back of Vince McMahon.

Stephanie whacks Vince with the pipe to the face and then goes up to the middle rope and smashes him with the pipe again. She pins Vince but he gets his foot on the bottom rope. Sable gets up on the apron and Stephanie goes after her which gives Vince opportunity to get up. Stephanie shoves Vince into Sable and then hits Vince with a bulldog for a two count. Stephanie picks up the pipe again but Vince grabs her by the throat and throws her to the mat. Vince picks up the pipe and swings it into Stephanie’s ribs before choking her with it. Linda throws in the towel! This match is over! Vince McMahon wins the match which means Stephanie will have to resign as Smackdowns general manager. After the match Vince pie-faces Linda and leaves with Sable.

There’s some footage shown from the last two weeks of Smackdown with Eddie dousing The Big Show in sewage and then Big show smashing up Eddie Guerrero’s car.

Eddie Guerrero (c) vs. The Big Show – United States Championship Match

It’s a first PPV meeting between these two men. Surprisingly these two men have only had one No Mercy match between them before tonight and that was Big Show who lost in tag team action in 2001. Eddie goes after Big Show before the bell and then drops the big man on the top rope. Big Show takes advantage with a clothesline and a headbutt and then clubs away at Eddie Guerrero’s back. Josh Mathews interviews Big Show after the match and Big Show says that he told you so.

Video package next for Brock Lesnar and The Undertaker.

Brock Lesnar (c) vs. The Undertaker – Biker chain match for WWE Championship

This is the third PPV match between these two men. Brock has won one match and the other was a draw. Brock actually defeated Undertaker at last years No Mercy PPV. Undertaker has a 1-2 record at the event. Undertaker has main evented more PPVs in WWE history than anybody else, this will be his 47th. 47 PPV main events in 104 PPVs that he’s wrestled on, not bad at all. The biker chain is on a pole in this match and either man can grab the chain and use it. Rating: 6.75/10

And that was the 2003 No Mercy pay per view. 8 matches, which is what we’ve grown accustom too. The Cruiserweight championship match was a great way to open the show, providing some fast action and unpredictability to kick off the show. Tajiri won the match but there were two men trying to get into the ring. They definitely were not fans and I’m sure over the coming weeks we’ll find out who these men were. Maybe the WWE’s version of the triads? As long as it isn’t the second coming of Kaientai then I’m all for it. Rey Mysterio STILL has not won a pay per view match. Maybe it’ll be 10th time lucky? Only Koko B Ware has a worse record, with 11 PPV losses. Chris Benoit beat A-Train in a standard enough win. Wouldn’t have made sense for A-Train to win unless he was getting a big push. This match just seemed like filler. Not one of Benoits best matches but A-Train will take it.

Zach Gowan beat Matt Hardy in one of the more surprising results of the night. I can’t really get into Gowan to tell you the truth whilst I think Hardy is so under-rated. This match was ok but Zach is very limited so Hardy controlled the match. Don’t get me wrong though, Gowan is so talented for a man with one leg, I’m just not sure what his role is at the moment. Maybe he’ll be an addition to the cruiserweight division in the long term. Heidenreich looks like he might be a potential opponent for Matt Hardy going forward. The Basham Brothers beat the APA with help from Shaniqua. I can see this feud continuing and if I was booking then I’d pop Jacqueline over to Smackdown to join her old mates the APA. Shaniqua’s boobs swelling is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Another filler match.

Vince McMahon beats Stephanie McMahon after Linda McMahon threw in the towel. Heel turn for Linda maybe? I doubt it. That means Stephanie is fired from her role as general manager of Smackdown. Maybe Vince will take it over, it’s pointless having the two of them. Stephanie was talking about babies a couple of weeks ago which makes me think she might be pregnant and this’ll give her some time off. Her and Triple H are due to get married 6 days after this event. This match wasn’t great but did provide some entertainment. Kurt Angle beat John Cena in the match of the night. This was a bit of a filler match but turned out to be really good. John Cena has now fought the likes of Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, The Undertaker and Brock Lesnar in singles matches on pay per view and has really improved over time. Kurt is in limbo whilst he’s not in the WWE title picture.

Big Show beat Eddie Guerrero to win the United States Championship which marked the only title change of the evening. I like Guerrero as US champion but maybe it’s time to move him up to the main event, despite him being tag team champion. Big Show has never been given a decent title run, both of his WWE title reigns lasted a month so maybe this is his chance to really shine as a champion. Then in the main event Brock Lesnar beat The Undertaker to retain his WWE Championship. It makes sense, Brock is over as rover right now and needed somebody to beat. It was a weird match with the lights going out at one point but leading to nothing. The FBI would come out and so did Vince McMahon. It was an alright match and it might lead to a re-match at Survivor Series. Not sure what Vince has got against The Undertaker though.

Overall an average, run of the mill pay per view. The Smackdown pay per views definitely don’t seem as strong as the Raw PPV’s. The roster is a lot thinner which is why guys like A-Train, The Bashams, Vince & Stephanie and Zach Gowan are getting matches. The Smackdown weekly shows are still strong though. Next up is Survivor Series.

  1. Three things of note:

1.Benoit forcing Albert to tap out to the Sharpshooter was done in tribute to Stu Hart, who had died three days prior to this PPV.

2.This is the final WWE PPV appearance for Zach Gowen, who would go on to lose to Tajiri on the October 23rd edition of SmackDown, and even got beaten down by Akio and Sakoda. After that, Gowen was taken off TV until he was fired from the WWE in February 2004 for being a total pain backstage.

From there, Gowen turned to drugs throughout the 2000’s, until he went to a WWE-paid rehab program and cleaned up his life. Nowadays, a clean Zach Gowen wrestles on the indy circuit with the likes of Gregory Iron and Nick Dinsmore a.k.a. Eugene.

Meanwhile, Matt Hardy is off TV until the Raw after Survivor Series 2003, which you will be getting to next time.

3.Stephanie lost her match because she was about to get married to Triple H – for real!
