The Biggest Blockbuster Of The Summer. Summerslam returns for the 21st year and it is a stacked card. The WWE Championship is set to be defended as Triple H puts the title on the line. A battle royal on Smackdown would decide a number one contender for Triple H and after The Big Show, Jeff Hardy, Mr Kennedy, Umaga and MVP were eliminated it was The Great Khali that stood tall. Since then Triple H and Khali have fought in a broken glass arm wrestling competition which was didn’t have a conclusive winner because Khali attacked The Game. This match will be the first these two have ever had against one another. The other big match on Smackdown is courtesy of Vickie Guerrero. As punishment for Edge cheating on her she told her husband that she has re-instated The Undertaker and it’ll be Edge and The Undertaker to do battle once again this time at Summerslam inside of Hell In A Cell.

Over on Raw, John “Bradshaw” Layfield won the opportunity to fight for CM Punk’s World Heavyweight Championship when he pinned CM Punk in a handicap match. Since then Layfield has berated Punk and told him that he’s not worthy to hold the World Heavyweight title. CM Punk says that he is a better man that Bradshaw but can he beat the former WWE Champion at Summerslam? Arguably the bigger match on Raw will be the first time ever contest between John Cena and Batista. John Cena actually hit Batista with a right hand when John “Bradshaw” Layfield ducked the shot. Since then the relationship has been patchy between the two. Mike Adamle, the new General Manager of Raw, announced that the two would meet at Summerslam but not before the two would win the World Tag Team Championships from Ted Dibiase and Cody Rhodes before losing them back to the upstart team the next week.

The ECW Championship is set to be defended as Mark Henry puts the title on the line against Matt Hardy who beat John Morrison, The Miz and Finlay in a fatal four way match. The Intercontinental and Women’s Championships will be defended in the same match as Mickie James and Kofi Kingston put the belts on the line against WWE’s newest couple of Beth Phoenix and Santino Marella. Also tonight, Jeff Hardy will go one on one with the man that has said he is too reckless both in the ring and in life, MVP. This rivalry has raged on with MVP taking pops at Jeff Hardy’s checkered history.

In a dark match prior to the event, The Big Show defeated Bam Neely.

A video package kicks us off with a movie theme to it and also featuring some highlights of Summerslams gone by. The package then focuses on Edge and The Undertaker which is the only match to be hyped up, interesting. I guess that match will be on last then.

Jim Ross welcomes us to the show. Michael Cole then chimes in hyping up John Cena and Batista, Jerry Lawler mentions CM Punk and Batista and Jim Ross then hypes Triple H and The Great Khali.

Jeff Hardy vs. MVP

This is the second PPV match between these two men, Jeff beat MVP back at Judgment Day. This is a Summerslam debut for MVP whilst Jeff Hardy has a 0-3 record at the event having not wrestled at the event since 2001. MVP starts off quickly attempting a running boot but Hardy avoids it. The two men then battle to the outside where Jeff throws MVP into the barricade. Back in the ring and Hardy covers MVP for a one count. Hardy then hits a slam and a springboard legdrop for a two count. Jeff applies an armbar but MVP gets to the ropes to break it. Hardy hits some kicks and right hands but MVP hits a belly to belly suplex out of nowhere sending Jeff Hardy into the turnbuckles for a near fall. MVP applies an inverted full nelson and then transitions into a camel clutch. MVP hasn’t won many matches since losing the United States Championship to Jeffs brother Matt at Backlash. MVP breaks the hold but then locks on a single leg crab and then a grapevine but Jeff gets to the ropes to break the hold.

MVP lays in some boots and then starts to work the back of his opponent before getting a near fall. MVP ties Hardy up in a tree of woe, slams his head into the mat and then gets another near fall. MVP looks to hit a powerbomb but Hardy slides down the back and hits a neckbreaker. Jeff hits a mule kick and then looks to hit a pendulum dropkick but MVP kicks him away and pins Jeff again for another near fall. MVP hits a dropkick and then looks to hit the drive-by kick but Hardy beats him to it, taking MVP down with a slingblade. Jeff hits a side Russian leg sweep and a legdrop for a near fall. Hardy hits more kicks and then looks to hit the pendulum dropkick again but again MVP counters it. Jeff hits whisper in the wind and then goes up to hit the swanton bomb but Shelton Benjamin appears! Hardy flies to the outside and takes out Benjamin before going back up top to hit the swanton bomb on MVP but MVP has had time to recover and moves out of the way. MVP hits the drive-by kick and gets the 3! MVP beats Jeff Hardy tonight in a surprising result!

Santino tags Beth who hits Kofi with kicks and then tags Santino back in. Santino hits a suplex for a one count and then applies a crossface again. Kofi gets out of it and the two men knock heads so both tag in their partners. Mickie hits some forearms and a clothesline. Mickie then takes out Santino before hitting a hurricanrana on Phoenix. Mickie heads to the top and hits a Lou Thesz press. Santino gets involved but Mickie hits him with a DDT. Beth then hits a facebuster and that’s enough for the three! Beth Phoenix and Santino win the match and both the Intercontinental and Women’s Championship! Fun match.

And that was Summerslam 2008. It felt like a fair average show that picked up towards the end. It started off ok with MVP and Jeff Hardy who have both had considerably better matches than tonight. I’m not sure what was missing really but something didn’t quite click between the two men although it was better than their match at Judgment Day. I was surprised MVP won the match actually, he’s been on a bad run as of late but it looks like Jeff will now transition into a feud with Shelton Benjamin as he cost Hardy the match. In a slightly better match, Santino and Beth Phoenix won the Intercontinental and Women’s Championships respectively by beating Kofi Kingston and Mickie James. I don’t mind these title changes, I think Santino elevates the IC title, no offence to Kofi.

Matt Hardy beat Mark Henry by disqualification in a match that didn’t really get going. This feud will definitely continue and I’m sure the two will have a blowoff in the future. Jeff Hardy is all over the show, his match with MVP to the finish with Shelton Benjamin and then saving his brother from Mark Henry. Take what you will from all of that. CM Punk then defeated JBL which gave him his first clean PPV title defence. CM Punk needed it to be honest, he’s not as a big a star as guys like Batista, John Cena and JBL on Raw so needs a few victories. I’m glad Punk won the title but I don’t see him having a long reign. This was a good match though and a much needed win for the World Heavyweight Champion. Triple H then beatThe Great Khali. Not too much to say about this, it was an expected win. It wasn’t a great match but we’ve come to expect that with The Great Khali. It gives Triple H a big title defence though over somebody he hasn’t wrestled before.

It was interesting that the title matches didn’t end the show. Instead, John Cena vs. Batista was considered the Raw main event and they put on a good match. Batista won the match which surprised me slightly, I always expect John Cena to win. It took two Batista bombs in the end. I would like to see this feud continue but with Batista as a heel. He has been showing some heel tendencies recently and I’d like to see a full turn. Good match between these two men. The Undertaker then defeated Edge in the main event with a tombstone. This was a really good match, definitely the match of the night for me. I think this will be the end of the feud and it’s a good way to end it. I’m not sure about the special effects at the end though. I wouldn’t mind seeing Undertaker move on to a feud with Triple H as we haven’t seen that for a few years.

  1. There were no Tag-Team Title matches on this card, as the Raw Tag-Team Champions Ted DiBiase Jr. & Cody Rhodes had the night off, while the SmackDown Tag-Team Champions Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder were featured in a backstage segment.

Also, this marks the final WWE PPV appearance for Bam Neely, whose last appearance was on the November 4th edition of WWE’s ECW, losing to Matt Hardy. After that, Neely would be fired from WWE in January 2009, and spend 2010 in Combat Championship Wrestling before retiring for good:
