Armageddon is upon us! It’s the final PPV of 2008 and there are some big matches scheduled. The WWE Championship is set to be defended as Edge puts the belt on line. Edge knew he would be facing either Jeff Hardy, Triple H or Vladimir Kozlov, who would beat the clock in the quickest time. When it came down to it, Jeff Hardy and Triple H got exactly the same time and it was announced by Vickie Guerrero that the “board of directors” have decided that Edge would defend his title against both Triple H and Jeff Hardy at Armageddon. The mystery still remains about who attacked Jeff Hardy prior to Survivor Series with Edge denying all accountability and Jeff seemingly assuming Triple H was behind it. Jeff and Triple H have been going back and forth ever since but Triple H also denies being the attacker.

Over on Raw there was a triple threat match between Batista, Randy Orton and Chris Jericho to decide a number one contender to the World Heavyweight Championship and after Batista had done all the damage to Randy Orton it was Chris Jericho that would steal the victory. Chris Jericho now goes one on one with John Cena at Armageddon and Jericho has resentment towards Cena after it was John that let to Jericho getting fired back in 2005. Jericho got the better of Cena last week on Raw, locking on the walls of Jericho as the show went off the air. Also from Raw, Batista will go one on one with Randy Orton for the first ever time as the rivalry between these two former Evolution members continues. Randy has now aligned himself with Cody Rhodes and Manu so you can guarantee they will get involved tonight.

The ECW Championship will not be defended tonight but champion Matt Hardy will be in action as he takes on Vladimir Kozlov. Kozlov fought Matt Hardy a few weeks ago on Smackdown in the beat the clock challenge but Hardy managed to run out the clock, helping his brother Jeff and costing Kozlov a shot at the WWE Championship at the same time. Kozlov looks to extract revenge against Matt Hardy tonight in a non-title match.  Also tonight will be the finals of a tournament to crown a number one contender to William Regals Intercontinental Championship. In the first round Kofi Kingston beat Kane, Rey Mysterio beat The Miz, John Morrison beat Finlay and CM Punk defeated Snitsky. Rey would then beat Kofi and CM Punk beat John Morrison setting up the finals between Rey Mysterio and CM Punk tonight.

In a dark match prior to the event John Morrison and The Miz defeated Jesse and Festus which is a rematch from the dark match on last years Armageddon event but the result changes as Miz and Morrison win this time.

The show opens with a video package focusing on the WWE Championship match and then the World Heavyweight Championship match. Fireworks go off in the arena which has the elaborate castle-like set. Jim Ross welcomes us to Buffalo, New York.

Matt Hardy vs. Vladimir Kozlov

This is a first PPV match between these two men. It’s a second PPV match for Kozlov who is looking for his first PPV victory tonight. Todd Grisham and Matt Strikers are the commentators for this match. Hardy has a 0-4 record at Armageddon events, he’s looking for his first victory at the event tonight. Kozlov has never been pinned or made to submit so far in the WWE. This is a non-title match which I think tells you who is going to win this match. Kozlov forced Hardy into the corner in the early going but Hardy fires back with some right hands and a sunset flip. Vladimir attempts a slam but Hardy slips down the back for the first near fall of the night. Kozlov hits a side suplex and then launches Hardy into the ringpost twice. Kozlov then uses headbutts and an arm drag into a wristlock. Hardy fights out of it but Kozlov takes him back down with a firemans carry. Nobody has fought as many PPV matches without main eventing a PPV as Matt Hardy.

Kozlov applies an arm bar which Hardy gets out of with a facebuster. Kozlov locks Hardy’s arms and hits him with headbutts for a two count. Kozlov then goes back to the armbar and then slams Hardy into the canvas for a near fall. Vladimir then applies a keylock as the crowd get behind Matt Hardy. Hardy gets to the ropes to break the hold and rolls out to the apron before Dropping Kozlov on the top rope. Matt then heads to the top and dives off with a double axe handle. Kozlov looks like he hit a headbutt but Hardy doesn’t sell. Hardy throws Kozlov out of the ring and then looks to dive off the apron but Kozlov catches him. Kozlov then looks to smash Hardy into the ringpost but Hardy slips down and smashes Vladimir into the post a couple of times. Back in the ring and Hardy hits a side effect for a near fall. Hardy is bleeding from the left arm somehow. Hardy attempts a twist of fate but Kozlov pushes him away. Hardy then comes off the middle rope but Kozlov hits him with a clothesline for a two count.

Hardy rolls Kozlov up out of nowhere for a two count and then avoids a splash in the corner. Hardy hits right hands in the corner but Kozlov drops him on the top of the ringpost and follows it up with a headbutt and a uranage which is enough for the three. Vladimir Kozlov wins the match. Matt Hardy has lost at all five of his Armageddon appearances now. Not a great match and a shame it was non-title.

Vickie Guerrero, Edge and Chavo Guerrero are backstage watching the show. edge and Vickie are happy with Matt Hardy getting beaten by Kozlov. Edge leaves to get ready for his match. Chavo doesn’t seem happy. Chavo asks Vickie how they took out Jeff Hardy in his hotel before Survivor Series. Vickie says that he and Edge had nothing to do with it. She then asks him to go and get her a coffee. Chavo face turn coming?

Jim Ross and Tazz introduce a poll for who attacked Jeff Hardy. Was it Edge, Triple H, Kozlov or other?

Hornswoggle is backstage and hits Eve with his inflatable shillalah. Finlay apologises and tells Hornswoggle to stay backstage tonight. Hornswoggle is disappointed.

William Regal and Layla are ringside for the next match.

CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio – Finals of the tournament to determine a number one contender to the Intercontinental Championship

This is a first PPV match between these two men. Rey Mysterio is 2-1 at Armageddon events, CM Punk is 0-1. We’re told that CM Punk and Kofi Kingston lost the World Tag Team Championships last night at a live event to The Miz and John Morrison and shown some stills. Punk and Mysterio shake hands to start the match and Mysterio quickly rolls Punk up for a one count. Punk then takes Mysterio down and applies an STF and then a front facelock. Mysterio counters into a hammerlock and then a front facelock. Lots of chain wrestling in the early going as Punk applies an armbar and then a headlock before knocking Rey down for a quick pinfall. The two men then exchange pinfalls as the pace quickens. Mysterio sets Punk up for a 619 but Punk sees Rey coming and hits armdrags and then attempts the go to sleep but Rey hits an arm drag of his own to counter it.

Punk throws Rey out of the ring right in front of William Regal and Layla. Punk then dives out and lands right on Mysterio. Back in the ring and Punk gets a two count on the pinfall attempt. Punk then hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for a near fall before applying a body scissors. Mysterio climbs to the top but Punk crotches him up there, tying him up in a tree of woe. Punk then hits kicks until Mysterio avoids one. Rey pulls himself up and hits a moonsault for a near fall. Punk hits a powerslam for a near fall and then applies a fujiwara armbar. Mysterio gets to the ropes to break the hold and then manages to lock on an armbar of his own. Punk gets to the ropes. Rey hits a springboard dropkick which kicks Punk out of the ring. Rey then heads to the top and dives out at CM Punk and both men are down. Mysterio throws Punk back into the ring and then springboards in with a seated senton. Mysterio hits a cross body for a near fall and then a victory roll for another near fall which CM Punk counters into a pinfall of his own for another near fall.

Punk and Mysterio exchange kicks and Punk misses with a knee in the corner. Punk then backdrops Mysterio into the corner and hits his running knee and bulldog combo for a near fall. Mysterio sets Punk up for a 619 but Punk ducks it and then scoops Mysterio up for the go to sleep but Rey counters with with a hurricanrana. Punk lands on the middle rope and Mysterio hits a 619! Punk avoids a springboard splash but Rey rolls Punk up out of nowhere for a two count. Rey attempts another victory rolls but CM Punk counters it into a go to sleep! Punk hooks the leg and gets the three! CM Punk beats Rey Mysterio tonight and becomes number one contender to the Intercontinental Championship. Good match between these two men.

Jeff Hardy is very dimly lit backstage. He talks about being a failure in the past but tonight is a new chapter.

There’s a VT next showing the relationship between John “Bradshaw” Layfield and Shawn Michaels, with JBL taking on Shawn Michaels as an employee due to Michaels’ poor financial situation.

JBL’s music and out comes Layfield in his limo. Layfield walks to the ring and introduces his newest employee, Shawn Michaels. Michaels comes out and claims that he has fallen on hard times. He needs the job from JBL to put his kids through college. A “you sold out” chant breaks out. Michaels says that this isn’t something he wants to do, it’s something he has to do.

Eve Torres is backstage with Randy Orton. Before Randy can talk, Cody Rhodes and Manu turn up. Cody says that Batista isn’t on “our” level. Manu then says that Orton will expose Batista for the fraud that he is. Orton doesn’t say a word, the three men leave.

Finlay vs. Mark Henry – Belfast Brawl

This is a first PPV match between these two men. Mark Henry is joined by Tony Atlas but Finlay comes alone. Mark Henry is 1-2 at Armageddon events whilst Finlay is 1-1. Finley gets a good start as he is the quicker of the two but Henry quickly dumps him out of the ring. Finlay sells his left leg but then hits a drop toe hold on Henry into the Raw announce table. Henry rams Finlay into the ringpost and then into the ringpost before tossing Finlay into the barricade. Finlay fights back and kicks Henry in the head but Henry sweeps his legs as he stands on the apron. Back in the ring and Henry attempts a splash but Finlay gets out of the way. Finlay hits some kneedrops and then grabs a couple of kendo sticks from under the ring and tosses them into the ring as well as a couple of trash cans. Finlay drops a trash can lid and so Tony Atlas picks it up and nails Finlay with it but Finlay kicks Atlas in the head. Finlay gets in the ring where Mark Henry smashes him with a trash can lid.

Mark Henry hits a guillotine on the middle rope for a near call. A bit of a Mexican wave breaks out in the crowd which is disrespectful. Finlay throws a trash can at Henry and then leathers him with a kendo stick. Finlay hits a DDT and then kicks a trash can into Henry’s head for a near fall. Henry hits a couple of headbutts and then tries for a banzai drop but Finlay gets out of the way. Finlay grabs his shillalah but runs into a big boot. Mark Henry then picks up the shillalah and snaps it in half! Finlay comes at Henry with a kendo stick but Mark blocks it and snaps the kendo stick before locking on a bear hug. Hornswoggle then turns up and looks to climb to the top but Henry throws Finlay into Hornswoggle knocking Hornswoggle to the outside and under the ring. Henry smashes Finlay with a trash can and then throws the ring steps into the ring. Finlay hits a low dropkick and Hornswoggle then hands Finlay a second shillalah! Finlay hits Mark Henry with it and pins him for the three! Finlay wins the match which surprises me! Big win for the Irishman in his own type of match.

Batista vs. Randy Orton

Amazingly this is the first ever singles match between these two men. Batista is 3-3 at Armageddon PPV’s, Randy Orton is 1-1. Randy Orton is joined by Cody Rhodes and Manu. Randy hits a jawbreaker and a DDT and then looks to hit a punt to the head but Batista counters it, throwing Orton into the corner and hitting him with shoulder charges and a clothesline. Batista lays in some big right hands but Orton looks to counter it only for Batista to land on his feet and hit a Batista bomb which is enough for the three! Batista beat Randy Orton tonight! Not a terrible match between these two men.

There’s a VT up next showing what happened on Raw last week with the slammy awards and then the chaos that ensued with John Cena and Chris Jericho and Edge, Triple H and Jeff Hardy.

Maria, Mickie James, Kelly Kelly & Michelle McCool vs. Maryse, Jillian Hall, Victoria & Natalya – Santa’s Little Helper 8 Diva Tag Team Match

This is an unexpected additional match. Victoria and Mickie James are the only two divas to have wrestled at an Armageddon PPV before, Victoria won her match and Mickie lost hers. Mickie James starts the match against Maryse. Maryse applies a headlock which Mickie counters with an arm drag. The two girls slug it out and Maryse does a good job of running away. Maryse tags in Natalya who goes toe to toe with Mickie before slapping her. Mickie hits a Lou Thesz press and then a big slap before tagging in Kelly Kelly who comes in with a sunset flip for a one count. Kelly hits a clothesline but Natalya takes her down with a body check. A little chain wrestling and then a dropkick from Kelly Kelly. Natalya forces Kelly Kelly to her teams corners and Victoria gets involved. Kelly fights them all off but Natalya drops Kelly with a clothesline for a near fall.

Natalya tags in Jillian Hall who throws Kelly Kelly by her hair. Jillian hits a powerslam and then throws for a moonsault but Kelly gets her knees up. Kelly Kelly tags in Maria who slugs it out with Jillian. Maria hits a couple of boots and a bulldog for a one count. Victoria broke up that pinfall. All 8 girls then go at it before going back to their own corners. Maria hits a headscissors on Jillian and Michelle then tags herself in. Michelle hits the Styles clash on Jillian and that’s enough for the three. I’ve never seen Michelle use that finisher before. McCool continues towards a heel turn. Victoria not get tagged into the match officially in that one but thanks for showing up.

The Great Khali and Ranjin Singh are out. It’s time for a Christmas kiss cam. Ranjin asks the winning team which of the divas want a kiss from Khali. Michelle puts Maria forward but Maria reverses it and puts Michelle forward. McCool scarpers with her title. Singh then says that it’s ok, he can still kiss three divas. None of them seem keen. No worries though, Ranjin Singh has a back-up plan. Why do I sense Mae Young. Yep! Here comes Mae Young! Jerry Lawler has a hundred gags as Mae Young walks to the ring. Mae Young couldn’t look any happier. Khali and Mae Young have a big kiss and Khali looks like he’s about to throw up. The commentators made this pretty funny. As did The Great Khali.

Chris Jericho is backstage getting ready.

There’s a video package for John Cena and Chris Jericho.

John Cena (c) vs. Chris Jericho – World Heavyweight Championship match

This is the fourth PPV match between these two men, John Cena has won the previous three. Chris Jericho is 4-1 at Armageddon PPV’s whilst John Cena is 2-0. The two men get right into it and Jericho locks on a headlock. Cena gets out of it but Jericho hits the first knockdown of the match. Jericho then goes to work on Cena’s neck which might not be 100% due to Randy Orton. Cena takes Jericho down with a spear and hits some lefts and rights. Jericho exits the ring and Cena follows, smashes Jericho into the ring steps and then throws him back into the ring. Jericho quickly lays in some boots to Cena and then some right hands. The World Heavyweight championship has changed hands every time it has been defended at this event. Jericho applies a sleeper and screams “ask him” at the referee which he has been doing recently and I find quite hilarious.

Cena gets up to his feet and has Jericho set up for the FU but Jericho counters it with a DDT. Cena rolls out to the apron where Jericho attempts a springboard dropkick but Cena catches him on his shoulders. Jericho slides down and then hits a bulldog of sorts onto the ring steps! Jericho rolls Cena back into the ring and pins him for a two count. Jericho chokes Cena on the ropes and then hits a snapmare and applies a chinlock. Cena gets out of it then avoids a shoulder charge in the corner. It’d advantage Cena now as he hits two shoulder blocks and a side slam which sets him up for the five knuckle shuffle which he hits. I use the word “hits” lightly. Cena sets up for the FU but Jericho counters and attempts the walls of Jericho but Cena powers out of it. Cena hits a belly to belly for a near fall. Jericho fires back with a missile dropkick for a near fall of his own.

Cena hits a hiptoss and a clothesline before attempting the throwback but Jericho sidesteps it and hits the lionsault for a near fall. Jericho then attempts an enzeguri but Cena counters it and tries to lock on the STFU which Jericho counters into the walls of Jericho! Cena eventually gets out of it and locks on the STFU! Jericho taps out which means Cena retains his title!

There’s a Royal Rumble promo next.

The poll results are in. 65% think that Edge attacked Jeff Hardy.

There’s a video package for the WWE Championship next.

Edge (c) vs. Triple H vs. Jeff Hardy – WWE Championship match

This is a first time triple threat match between these two men. Jeff Hardy and Triple H battled at last years Armageddon. Edge has a 3-1 record at Armageddon events, Triple H is 3-2 and Jeff Hardy is 1-2. Only once in Armageddon history has the WWE Championship changed hands and that was back in 2002 when Kurt Angle beat The Big Show. The bell rings and Jeff goes right for Edge before kicking Triple H down with a flying forearm. Jeff takes down both men with more flying forearms and then Irish whips Triple H into Edge. Triple H hits the deck and Hardy hits poetry in motion off it into Edge for the first two count of the match. Hardy throws Triple H out of the ring and then looks to dive out but Edge floor Jeff. Edge then looks to spear Hardy but Jeff side steps it causing Edge to fly out of the ring. Hardy then dives out at Edge taking him out.

Triple H drops Jeff Hardy on the outside with a clothesline and then throws him into the barricade. Edge then catches Triple H with a boot as he climbs back into the ring. Edge hits some right hands but Triple H fires back with some of his own before running into Edge’s boot. Triple H hits a high knee and then a couple of clotheslines in the corner. Helmsley looks to hit a pedigree on Edge but Jeff Hardy interrupts it. Triple H knocks down Hardy and once again sets Edge up for a pedigree but Jeff comes off the top with a whisper in the wind on Triple H and all three men are down. Jeff and Edge are the first up and Hardy knocks Edge down with clotheslines and then a legdrop. Triple H breaks up the pinfall attempt. Edge Irish whips Hardy who slips when he tries to jump to the top. Edge then sets up for a side suplex but Triple H picks Edge up on his shoulders and Hardy leaps off the top with a whisper in the wind on Edge!

Hardy hits a pendulum dropkick on Triple H but Edge attacks Jeff from behind with an Edge-o-cution for a near fall. Edge then looks for a spear but Hardy sidesteps it and Edge hits Triple H. Hardy disposes of Edge and then hits twist of fate on Triple H before going to the top and hitting the swanton bomb! Jeff hooks the leg but Edge drags Hardy out of the ring. Edge throws Hardy into the barricade and then smashes him off the Raw announce desk. Hardy reverses a second Irish whip and sends Edge into the barricade. Hardy then takes apart the Smackdown announce desk but Triple H attacks Hardy from behind. Triple H throws Edge over the ECW announce desk and then takes apart the Raw announce desk. Triple H sets Jeff Hardy up for a pedigree on the Raw announce desk but Hardy counters it, looks for a twist of fate but from nowhere Edge dives at Hardy and spears him through the Smackdown announce desk!

Triple H and Edge het back into the ring where Triple H looks for a pedigree but Edge counters it and hits an impaler DDT in the middle of the ring. Edge motions for a spear but Triple H counters it with a spinebuster. Triple H then sets up for a pedigree and this time he hits it! But from nowhere comes Vladimir Kozlov! Kozlov drags Triple H out of the ring and then throws him into the ring steps! Matt Hardy turns up but Kozlov fights him off. Jeff Hardy heads to the top but Kozlov pushes him down to the outside. Kozlov and Matt Hardy then fight to the back leaving Edge the only man in the ring. Edge gets to his feet as Triple H rolls into the ring. Edge then hits Triple H with a spear in the middle of the ring but Triple H kicks out! Edge rolls to the outside and grabs two steel chairs. He sets up one underneath Triple H’s face and then looks for a con-chair-to but Jeff Hardy grabs the chair out of his hand and smashes Edge with it!

Jeff Hardy climbs to the top but Triple H crotches him up there. Triple H hits Edge with a pedigree! He covers the champion but Jeff Hardy comes in off the top with a swanton bomb! Triple H falls to the outside and Hardy pins Edge for the three! Jeff Hardy wins the WWE Championship!

Rating: 8/10

And that was Armageddon 2008. It felt like a pretty flat pay per view for the most part but there were three great matches worth checking out. The opener wasn’t really one of them. Vladimir Kozlov beat Matt Hardy in a predictable enough match which would’ve been better if the ECW Championship was on the line but obviously Kozlov needed to get the win. I mean, it was what it was. It gave Kozlov his first PPV win and it was twice as good as his dreadful match with Triple H at Survivor Series. I guess Matt Hardy goes back to Smackdown to feud with his number one contender Jack Swagger whilst Kozlov may not be done with Triple H due to what would happen later this night.

The match between CM Punk and Rey Mysterio was a good one. Lots of un counters and wrestling in this one which pitted two babyfaces against one another. CM Punk came out with the win and becomes number one contender to the Intercontinental Championship. This match was always a potential showstealer. I like Punk in the IC division, it makes a lot of sense, it’s about his level. Mysterio also fits the IC division so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back in the hunt for that title at some point. Finlay then beat Mark Henry in a Belfast Brawl. I didn’t actually realise this match was happening. Mark Henry has been such a strong heel as of late I’m surprised he lost to Finlay in this one. I don’t think Finlay needed the win as much as Mark Henry who has been floundering a little since losing the ECW title. Finlay wins though in his own match and maybe it’ll get him involved in the ECW title picture.

Batista beats Randy Orton next. I’m not sure how I felt about this match. It could have been a lot better. This is a seriously big main event match and they could get a few PPV matches out of it but instead Batista wins clean. This buries Orton a bit. I would’ve preferred to have seen Orton win dirty leading to more PPV matches between the two. Batista wins though and that probably puts him in a good position to get another match for the World Heavyweight Championship soon. Then came a surprise match between the divas. It was faces vs. heels and the faces won this one. Pretty pointless match but I guess it was a “feel good” match for the festive period. Michelle, Maria, Mickie and Kelly Kelly get the win but I can’t help but think that maybe Maryse should have beat Michelle to get her back in the divas title hunt. What I do I know though.

John Cena beat Chris Jericho to retain the World Heavyweight Championship. I really like Chris Jericho at the moment but John Cena is the man and he continues to hold the title. It’s starting to get towards Wrestlemania season so the right champions need to get into the right spots for the biggest show of the year and I guess John Cena fits into that picture. I’m not really sure what the plans are for the short term, there are plenty of main eventers on Raw that could compete for Cena’s title, the likes of Chris Jericho again, John “Bradshaw” Layfield, Randy Orton or Kane. Maybe even Batista or Shawn Michaels. Plenty of competitors. Decent match tonight between Cena and Jericho. And then in tonights main event Jeff Hardy finally became WWE Champion by defeated Edge and Triple H in the main event. This was a brilliant match and it was great to see Hardy finally win the belt when it looked like it was never going to happen. Kozlov got involved as did Matt Hardy but in the end Jeff raised the title. Great match.

  1. And so this marked the final Armageddon PPV, as starting next year, the WWE’s December PPV would be renamed “TLC: Tables, Ladders, & Chairs”.
